The last blog post saw me going to visit the SQ SKL in Terminal 3 after getting off a 13-hour flight from LHR. After 2 hours of layover, I now proceeded to the A-gates for a short hop to Hong Kong on SQ’s A330 – with the regional Business Class seats.
I think the regional seats were quite narrow but it was quite alright for a 3-hour flight. Anything more in the seats would be too much. A major problem is that there is no stowage during takeoff / landing – a major problem since the overhead bins for A330s are actually quite small. And when there is a full flight as per the flight I am about to review, there can be very limited storage spaces.
Like my flight to London two months ago, my flights left the biggest pier in the A-gates:
My flight was already boarding by the time I arrived at the security checkpoints:
My bird today: 9V-STD
Boarding through door L1: (no F today)
First glance of the seat:
Press was offered, Hong Kong, Singapore and international newspapers available.
Welcome drinks: non-alcoholic cocktail or champagne – and both for me (well, my neighbour has not arrived yet)
Seat buttons and IFE controls
Movie time for this evening: Miss you already – A British comedy (more like a tragedy)
Amenities offered – again, the lack of amenity kit is one of the major criticisms for SQ’s Business Class
Post-take off cocktails: SilverKris Sling – my favourite out of the many offered
About 1.5 hours into the flight, the table was laid (the service up to now was rather slow, I would prefer it to be quicker)
Starter – Grilled Octopus Salad – was not very good… Tasted weird
Garlic Bread and Champagne – much better
The best main ever: Grilled Chilean Seabrass with Chowder Sauce
To show you how good it is:
Dessert: Mint Chocolate Movenpick Ice Cream
By dessert course, we were already nearly there
On flights to and from China (including Hong Kong), a selection of gourmet Chinese teas are offered. And I tried the (very good!) Mao Feng Green Tea
Cheese course and fruit platter. The cheese was unremarkable but the fruits were there to surprise – very refreshing
Plates were cleared finally at 45 minutes out of Hong Kong
Last look at the Business Class cabin before landing – very full, only one seat empty tonight
Verdict: Very Good
For a regional flight, SQ ticks many boxes: it could easily have offered a one-tray service, but instead a full service was given and much appreciated. I would have preferred seats with long-haul configuration as this regional ones were not spacious, and when the flight was full, like the one I was on, it can get a bit crowded and privacy was non-existent.
On a side-note, I was out of customs in 15 minutes – that’s something.
